Meet Our Goats

We care for a small herd of dairy goats -- Actually, a VERY small herd!

Molly, Millie, Moya, and Cocoa have become very much a part of our lives. Each has her own personality. We adore these sweet, funny creatures and are glad to be able to care for them. While our does are now "retired" from milking, they still enjoy life on our little farm.

Molly, Millie, and Cocoa are mixed breed goats, certainly not show quality, but we love them nonetheless. They are a hodge-podge mix of Alpine, Toggenburg, La Mancha, and Saanen breeds. Moya is our only "pure breed," a Sable Saanen. But she's not qualified as a show goat, either.

Molly is our prima dona. She is EXTREMELY affectionate during milking season. From April to October she follows us everywhere, all around the pasture and barn, wanting her head scratched. But once the season is finished, she wants nothing more to do with us! If we try to touch her, she just runs away.

Millie is Molly's sister. She loves us all year 'round, and never tires of being scratched and patted. But even more than loving our attention, Millie loves food! We take care to moderate her hay and her grain rations, working to keep her at a healthy weight. We mostly fail, but we keep trying. She's our most loving caprine companion.

Cocoa is Millie's daughter. We often call her "goofball" because she's not especially bright and always seems to be getting herself in trouble. Cocoa is our most shy goat -- if you can call a goat "shy." She rarely utters a bleat, but watches your every move with keen interest. She's also our most athletic goat. She loves to do what we call "Jackie Chans," where she kicks-up-her-heels-and-flies-sideways, a silly move that always makes us laugh.

Moya is a sweetheart, but boy, is she ever a loud mouth! If you're late getting out in the morning to feed the crew, she'll let you know. When compared with the other does, Moya seems almost prissy. She has long, elegant lines and moves gracefully about. When she stands, she likes to hold up one or the other of her front legs, with her hoof barely touching the ground, "pointing her toe" like a ballerina. Like Molly, Moya is a prolific milker. We prefer her milk for butter and for ice cream because it's so rich.
